FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 14, 2010, St. John’s, NL People and organizations from all over Labrador are availing of a travel fund that helps them take part in arts and cultural activities on the island portion of the province and bring in expertise from the island. Thirteen grants totalling $35,064 were awarded through the Labrador Cultural Travel Fund (LCTF) during the most recent granting session (October March 2010).
The LCTF, which was launched in the fall of 2007, is funded under the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Northern Strategic Plan and is administered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC).
“It’s encouraging to see individuals and groups from all over Labrador take advantage of this funding opportunity,” says Reg Winsor, executive director of the NLAC. “This session the LCTF has assisted applicants from Postville, Makkovik, Sheshatshiu, as well as Churchill Falls, Labrador City, Wabush, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.”
The LCTF provides funding to residents of Labrador to travel to Newfoundland to participate in arts and heritage activities. It also funds Labrador organizations so they can bring in resource people from the island to conduct seminars, workshops or similar events.
During this past granting session, several community theatre companies were funded to travel to Corner Brook for the Provincial Drama Festival; a number of individuals traveled to St. John’s to participate in the Sharing Our Cultures multicultural fair; Mamu Tshishkutamashutau of Sheshatshiu brought Dashi Malone and David Mercer of Wonderbolt Circus to Sheshatshiu and Natuashish to conduct workshops; and Gerald Mitchell traveled to St. John’s from Makkovik to attend the 2009 MusicNL Conference and Awards Show to receive the MusicNL Unsung Hero Award.

The NLAC is a non-profit Crown agency created in 1980 by The Arts Council Act. Its mission is to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Council is governed by a volunteer board of 13 appointed by government, reflecting regional representation of the province. This includes 10 professional artists who provide sectoral representation of the arts community; one community representative (with an interest in the arts); one business representative (with an interest in the arts); and one representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation (non-voting). The NLAC receives an annual grant from the Province to support a variety of granting programs, program delivery, office administration, and communications. It also seeks support from the public and private sector. It supports the following artistic disciplines: dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, and writing.
