About the Rhonda Payne Theatre Award:
The Rhonda Payne Theatre Award honours the memory of actor, writer and director Rhonda Payne. The award assists women theatre artists in Newfoundland and Labrador who are struggling to achieve their goals as actors or writers and comes with a $500 cash prize.
The Rhonda Payne Theatre Award is administered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC). All female applicants to the NLAC’s Professional Project Grants Program in the theatre category are considered for the annual award. The winner is chosen by the peer assessment committee for theatre during the fall granting session.
Rhonda Payne initiated the award by dedicating royalties from the production and publication of her works to a fund that assists women working in the Newfoundland and Labrador theatre community. After her death in 2002, Rhonda’s father, Rod Payne, established the Rhonda Payne Memorial Fund. Donations to the Memorial Fund can be made at TD Canada Trust, St. John’s Place, 140 Water Street, St. John’s, NL.
Previous winners of the Rhonda Payne Theatre Award are Nicole Rousseau, Michelle Rex Bailey, Sara Tilley, Ruth Lawrence, Sherry White and Joan Sullivan.
About the Women’s Work Festival:
The Women’s Work Festival is presented by White Rooster Theatre, She Said Yes! and RCA Theatre Company. Its purpose is to develop and encourage new work by women playwrights. The fourth annual Women’s Work Festival runs from March 1st to 3rd, with a different play reading each night. Readings take place at Eastern Edge Gallery, 72 Harbour Drive, St. John’s, at 7 p.m. nightly.
The readings feature a huge assortment of Newfoundland and Labrador talent, including veterans Andy Jones, Lois Brown and Donna Butt, working to develop three new works by women playwrights: The Collectors, by Shannon Bramer, Like a Mustard Seed, by Diane Vanden Hoven, and Bound, by Megan Coles.
Admission is pay-what-you-can, and all proceeds go to Marguerite’s Place, transitional housing for women and children in crisis.
