Patrick O'Flaherty
Born in 1939 on Long Beach, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, after his early education Patrick O'Flaherty earned a Ph.D. from University College, London. O'Flaherty has since worked as an educator at Memorial University, writer, columnist, commentator, consultant and scriptwriter.
In the 1980s he was the head of the English department at Memorial University. After his early retirement in 1985 to devote his time and energy to writing he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus for his sustained service to the university and its students, for his outstanding scholarly work in Newfoundland Studies and for introducing the teaching of Newfoundland literature at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Some of O'Flaherty's other contributions to the artistic and cultural life of this province include being a founding member of the Writer's Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador, chairing the 1990 provincial government Arts Policy task force and being a driving force in the establishment of the Journal of Newfoundland Studies.
