Emerging Artist Award
Definition
The Emerging Artist Award recognizes new and undisputed talent. It is awarded to an emerging artist, group or arts organization that has earned significant recognition for a piece of work or a generally out-sized impact on the scene. It comes with a $2,000 cash prize and a piece of original art.
Residency Requirements
The nominee must be resident in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of 12 months prior to the date of nomination. “Resident” is normally defined as someone who maintains a principal place of residence in the province. In the case of groups and organizations, 50% of the membership must qualify under the residency rules.
Nominations
Accredited Newfoundland and Labrador arts organizations and members of the general public can nominate one person, group or organization.
Nominators cannot nominate immediate family members. (Immediate family is defined as: spouse, child, parent, sister, brother, grandparent or grandchild.)
Nominees are considered only for the award for which they are nominated.
Each year a request for nominations (along with official nomination forms) is mailed to accredited arts organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Nominations are also solicited from the general public through print media advertising and the NLAC e-mail list. Nomination forms may be requested from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) and are available at www.nlac.nf.ca.
Permission from the nominee is mandatory.
Deadline: nominations must be received or postmarked by February 1, 2010.
Adequate support material (slides, photographs, cassette tapes, compact discs, VHS tapes, manuscripts, scores, CD-Roms, DVDs, floppy discs, zip discs, recent reviews, etc.) is mandatory and will inform Council's discussions.
Please note: Original artworks cannot be accepted as support material. The NLAC is not responsible for damage to or loss of any submitted support material. If you require support material to be returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your nomination package OR arrange to pick it up from the NLAC office. Support material will not be returned until after the Arts Awards ceremony. Any support material that has not been picked up after one year will be sent to the provincial archives.
Voting and Selection
The recipient of the Emerging Artist Award is selected by members of Council who vote by secret ballot. In the event of a tie vote, the Chair has a second vote.
If there are no nominees, or if those nominated do not qualify under the specified criteria, no award will be presented that year.
There is no limit to the number of times a person, group or organization may be nominated or win the Emerging Artist Award.
The Emerging Artist Award is given posthumously only if the nominee dies after being selected as the winner.
